2013).In northern Italy, this virus has been reported in a small sample of bank voles (Myodes glareolus) and yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis) with 50% and 10% Ljungan virus (LV), a picornavirus, was discovered in the Swedish vole population after six clustered deaths from myocarditis were noted in orienteers between 1989 and 1992. Four of five sera from the orienteer patients had detectable antibodies against one of the LV isolates. Wild bank voles (Myodes glareolus) develop T1D and a picornavirus, named Ljungan virus (LV), has been isolated from these animals. If CD-1 mice, that normally do not carry LV, are infected with this virus in utero and exposed to stress after birth, the male offspring get type 2 diabetes. Bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) kept in captivity develop diabetes mellitus to a significant extent. Also in wild bank voles, elevated blood glucose has been observed.

1999), and has subsequently been detected in many species of small rodents, especially voles (Arvicolinae; Johansson et al. 2003; Hauffe et al. 2010; Salisbury et al. 2013).

Ljungan virus types 1 to 6 belong to the species Parechovirus B, genus Parechovirus.. The partial genome sequence of a virus isolated from bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) was originally determined by Niklasson et al.

In BB rats LV was found in both prediabetic- and diabetic DPBB rats, as well as in diabetes-resistant rats. To The Ljungan virus is difficult to grow in a laboratory cell cultures. This method is therefore rarely successful for diagnosing Ljungan virus infection. - The Ljungan virus’ so called “2A gene” is doubled, which means that its gene pool is organised in a way that separates it from most other known picorna viruses.

Ljungan virus

Ljungan virus (LV), which belongs to the Parechovirus genus in the Picornaviridae family, was first isolated from bank voles (Myodes glareolus) in Sweden in 1998 and proposed as a zoonotic agent.

Journal Three strains of Ljungan virus (LV) were isolated from bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) and A-2 plaque virus (A-2) was isolated from human sera. To study the genetic relationship between these recently discovered viruses and the members of the family Picornaviridae , an evolutionary analysis has been carried out using the amino acid sequences of the two nonstructural proteins 2C and 3D.
